Gorgazzo’s Spring

The Gorgazzo’s spring (tributary of the Livenza) is an enchanting body of water with an intense blue color. A site of immeasurable naturalistic value, the spring is fed by the waters that, having sunk into the crevices of the Cansiglio or Monte Cavallo plateau, reappear on the surface. The name comes from the Friulian gorc, which means precisely abyss; the cave consists of a resurgence, one of the deepest ever explored in the world and the second deepest siphon karst spring in Europe after the Valchiusa Spring in Provence. In 2008, caver Luigi Casati reached a depth of -212 meters, a hitherto unbeaten limit due to dangerousness and strong internal currents. As of 2016 Gorgazzo is the deepest Italian spring ever explored. Near the mouth of the cavity, at a depth of 9 meters, there is a statue of Christ, which thanks to the exceptional clarity of the water and bottom, is perfectly visible outside from the shore on sunny days.
