Caneva Castle

Located at the foot of the great Cansiglio escarpment dominating a vast area of plain and the upper reaches of the Livenza River, Caneva Castle Hill is a fascinating place that exudes history. Here, no reconstructions and haunting brush give us a full sense of time and lived history that becomes legible. The castle was surrounded by two walls: the one on the top of the hill protected the stately homes and the keep thea lower one surrounded the village and agricultural outbuildings on the hill terraces. From the 17th century the site lost importance until it declined.
Today only a few ruins remain of the imposing medieval castle, the only landmark being the small church-sanctuary of Santa Lucia rebuilt and enlarged in the 16th century on 11th-century structures, located within the walls and still well preserved, with Renaissance frescoes inside. Interesting is the bell tower, a readaptation and overbuilding of the ancient keep, with the beautiful bas-relief of the Lion of St. Mark above the door.
